As noted within the BCDC Quality section, the QM, IDEAL, and the IQ Tool are used to inform our decisions we make as developers or designers. (From the IQ Tool Job Aid) What is the IQ Tool? A rubric used to evaluate all Brandman courses on the basis of IDEAL and Quality Matters standards. IDEAL looks at the course’s ability to reach the adult learner. QM focuses on the overall accessibility of a course for all learners. My Action Plan consists of seven (7) steps that will aide me in creating high quality curriculum, and that will positively inform my course development. AP item #1 – Align Course Learning Objectives with course requirements and module content This is observed in QM Rubric # 2.1 - The course learning objectives, or course/program competencies, describe outcomes that are measurable. AP item #2 – Review the assessments, tasks and assignments This effort is observed in QM Rubric # 2.2 The module/unit learning objectives or competencies describe outcomes that are measurable and consistent with the course-level objectives or competencies. In addition to #2.4 - the relationship between learning objectives or competencies and course activities is clearly stated. Lastly, # 3.1 - The assessments measure the stated learning objectives or competencies. AP item #3 – Focus on the measurements and evaluative components Rubrics: QM Rubric #3.3 & #3.4 target this effort. Section #3.3: Specific and descriptive criteria are provided for the evaluation of learners’ work and are tied to the course grading policy. Section #3.4 - The assessment instruments selected are sequenced, varied, and suited to the learner work being assessed. AP item #4 - Check for quality and variety instructional materials Offer more than the textbook. QM Rubric #4.5 targets this effort - A variety of instructional materials is used in the course. AP item #5 – Ensure variety and quality of resources. Consider diversity in student background AP item #6 – Create beneficial opportunities for engagement and interactive activities online and blended format. This is evident in QM Rubric #5.2 - Learning activities provide opportunities for interaction that support active learning. AP item #7 – Accessibility and technology / innovation and opportunity This will require attention to QM Rubric #1.5 - Minimum technology requirements are clearly stated and instructions for use provided. In addition to #1.7 Minimum technical skills expected of the learner are clearly stated. Section #7.2: Course instructions articulate or link to the institution’s accessibility policies and services. Additionally #6.2 and #6.3 –#6.2 - Course tools promote learner engagement and active learning. Section #6.3 - #6.3: Technologies required in the course are readily obtainable. Utilizing these as a guide to my targets within each new and developing course design should yield quality results.
